PHOTOTHERAPY

Phototherapy is a medical treatment that uses exposure to specific types of light, including fluorescent, halogen, sunlight, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs), to address certain medical conditions.

One common use of phototherapy is in treating hyperbilirubinemia, a condition characterized by elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin, a byproduct of hemoglobin breakdown, remains in the body until the liver can convert it into a form that can be excreted. When bilirubin levels become too high, it can lead to jaundice, resulting in a yellowish discoloration of the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. This is especially common in newborns, whose immature livers may struggle to process and clear bilirubin efficiently. Phototherapy helps reduce bilirubin levels by breaking it down into a form that can be more easily eliminated from the body.
